How to Store Cannabis Products in the Summer Heat

As temperatures rise, so do questions about how to store cannabis products safely and effectively. At Green Leaf NY, we get it — no one wants their favorite items to melt, dry out, or lose potency before they’re even used.

Thankfully, with a few simple storage tips, you can keep your products fresh all summer long.

Why Proper Storage Matters

Heat, light, humidity, and air exposure all play a role in how cannabis products hold up over time. Whether it’s flower, edibles, or oils, the wrong environment can affect:

  • Potency (especially for THC or CBD content)
  • Texture (gummies melting, flower drying out)
  • Flavor and aroma
  • Shelf life and freshness

If you’re investing in high-quality, licensed products, proper storage helps maintain the value — and the experience.

1. Keep Products Cool (But Not Frozen)

Aim for a stable, cool environment — ideally between 60–70°F. Avoid storing items in your car, by a window, or near heat sources like stoves or radiators.

  • Flower and vapes should be stored at room temperature.
  • Edibles can go in the fridge if they’re heat-sensitive (like chocolates or gummies).
  • Never freeze unless explicitly instructed on the label.

2. Avoid Sunlight and Humidity

Direct sunlight can degrade cannabinoids and dry out flower quickly. Store your items in opaque or UV-blocking containers and keep them away from windows.

Humidity can also cause mold or mildew, especially for flower. If you’re storing loose bud, use a sealed jar with a humidity control packet to stay in the safe range (between 55–62%).

3. Store in Airtight Containers

Oxygen breaks down plant compounds over time. Keep your flower or edibles in airtight containers — not zip bags — to protect aroma, potency, and freshness.

For best results:

  • Use glass jars for flower
  • Reseal edible pouches immediately after use
  • Keep tinctures and oils tightly capped between doses

4. Mind the Labels

Every licensed product in New York includes a “packaged on” date, and some include a best-by date as well. Use these as your guide, and when in doubt, always check for signs of degradation (odor change, dryness, stickiness, etc.).
